Welcome to 2015!

Well ladies and gentlemen, it's 2015 - can you believe it?! I had hoped to get out for a little bit of fun new year's eve, but instead I had to settle for running a fever on the couch. Oh  well, I had my cat, Netflix, some tea and a good chicken pot pie to keep me occupied.

I always make grand pronouncements at new year's, setting all manner of lofty goals and generally setting myself up for disappointment down the road. This year I am determined not to do that, but I still want to look forward with some sort of anticipation...so the question is, how to do that without expectations?

For  now, I'm going to work on a recent project I've taken on: learning how to get enrolled in part-time studies at BCIT for database construction & administration. In the 6 months I've spent working at the hospital foundation I've learned a lot of things about myself, and about different types of work. Everything became clear to me Christmas Eve, and I realized that I need to start looking at what I want to do in 10, 15, 20 years, not just what I could be doing for a year or two or what could be a stepping stone. I've also learned where my strengths lie, mainly in leaving somewhere that I had a strong skillset and experience, to do something new that I *thought* was going to be a grand career move on the path upwards. Sometimes you have to leave something to realize it's what you wanted all along...maybe just not in the exact format you had it before. Confused yet? That's alright...I'm still sorting it all out myself! haha

I'm also going to try to do at least a few things this coming year that are new, or take me ever so slightly out of my comfort zone. Going to Australia in October was definitely out of my comfort zone, and I got to meet some wonderful people, and reconnect with dear friends. I have however discovered that I'd still rather vacation in Ireland during spring or fall, where the jetlag is less severe and I'm more accustomed to the weather! ;) That being said, maybe I'll try Scotland next time - though I think it'll be in a couple of years, since I'm planning to start classes this spring (barring any unforseen issues with admissions and registration of course).

So, no grand ideas for the year, just working on getting myself on track to do something I find stimulating as a career a year or two down the road, with a little more practical education on it under my belt. Nothing  major...but I have to say, I'm definitely excited about the possibilities...it should be interesting to say the least!

And now, off to continue my recovery from this dreaded cold. Time for another cuppa I think!
